... in Northern Italy
(All of the "Restos" pages are works in progress. Return periodically for updates. I expect that the Italian Restos page will grow more slowly than the others because in Italy most of our meals, indeed the best ones, are taken at home with family and friends.)

La Freccia Nera (no website) : La Frec' may look like a pub, but it's not. Yes, it's a great place to get a beer, but if you're not a beer drinker, you won't be left out in the cold. Their desserts are indulgent and boozy. If you haven't had dinner, the best pizza I've ever had in Italy is right here.

Kingyo Sushi : All-you-can-eat San Francisco-style sushi in a sophisticated setting. This is not a self-service buffet, however: There is a friendly waitstaff to take and deliver your repeat orders. Note that there is a flat rate for the all-you-can-eat sushi, with separate charges for drinks and coperto (cover, meaning table setting). The coperto is the norm for all of Italy, you are in no way getting scammed.

L'Osteria della Carne (no website): It's all in the name! L'Osteria della Carne translates to The Meat Tavern. For carnivores, it's a wonderland of thickly cut beef, lamb, and pork steaks. For vegetarians who don't mind being surrounded by meat, the pastas and risottos are substantial and flavorful. There isn't a whole lot of innovation to the menu; their focus is on procuring the best ingredients (especially the meats!) and perfecting the classics.

Agriturismo Niccolini :
Via Antonio Pacinotti 99

Fattoria Gaggio : Gorgeous agriturismo set on the banks of Lake Varese. Views of the silvery lake can be enjoyed from the dining room as well as from their outdoor tables. If there are bimbi (kiddos) in your party, there is an outdoor playset, lots of grass to roll around on, and plenty of farm animals to greet through safety fences. All of the food is infused with quality and freshness. The faraona (guinea fowl) is a standout.

Birreria Forst : This brewhouse featuring heavy Alpine cuisine is part of a chain. The food is a reflection of Northern Italy's past as a part of the Austrian empire; Schnitzels and sausages in porcini mushroom sauces, gulasch served alongside polenta, "birramisu" instead of tiramisu ... In anyone else's hands, the food and the decor would be considered kitsch, but Forst has created a truly original and memorable Alpine art nouveau aesthetic and ambience.
Via Oss Mazzurana 38

Casa del Cioccolato (no website) : Just as Birreria Forst (above) capitalizes on Trentino's Austrian roots, Casa del Cioccolato takes a sweeter view, featuring handmade bonbons, frothy dessert coffees, and krapfen.
