Restos

Places to eat in the places I haunt.  (All of the "Restos" pages are works in progress.  Return often for updates.)

... in the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

AFTERNOON TEA
Dartealing :
Crown and Crumpet :
Garden Court in the Palace Hotel :
Lovejoy's Tea Room :

CAKE
Schubert's Bakery : I will mention Schubert's alone in this section, because they are without peer in the Bay Area, perhaps in the world (aside from Austria).  All of their cakes are delicious, but they are most known for the Swedish Princess Cake, which Dr Dre and I had on our dating anniversaries and at the reception of our civil wedding. Sometimes my coworkers and I would take a lunch-hour expedition out here to get cake slices to-go, and ate at our desks.
521 Clement Street
San Francisco 94118
Bus: Geary & 6th

DIM-SUM
Kingdom of Dumpling : Everything here is flavorful and ridiculously cheap.  Absolutely worth the trouble of waiting in line, squeezing into this cramped hole-in-the-wall, and coming out (full but overjoyed) smelling like food.
1713 Taraval Street
San Francisco 94116
Metro: Taraval & 27th (L line)
Great Eastern Restaurant :  This place is also commonly known as "Obama Dim-Sum," because this is where the beloved 44th President eats when he's in San Francisco (which is often).  The dim-sum here is ultra tasty.  You'll need to alternate each bite with a sip of tea to cut down on the grease, but that's what makes the experience authentic.
649 Jackson Street
San Francisco 94133
Metro: Powell Street (all lines) -- but you'll still have a significant walk deep into Chinatown.
Hong Kong Lounge : Even though it's not located in Chinatown, you'll always find this place packed with Chinese folk, so you know it's going to be good.
5322 Geary Boulevard
San Francisco 94121
Bus: Geary & 16th
City View : If you want dim-sum in elegant surroundings, this is the place to go.  Although the food is not as good as the other places listed here, this place wins on presentation, so maybe it's a good starter dim-sum for those who are still building up their gastronomical bravery.
642 Commercial Street
San Francisco 94111
Metro: Powell Street (all lines) -- a long walk into Chinatown, until the T-line expansion is up and running.

FILIPINO FOOD
Cabalen : Delicious Filipino take-out for your cheat days. Locations in Hercules, Vallejo, and Fairfield, but I stay close to Mom's and go to the Hercules branch.
1572 Sycamore Avenue, Suite F
Hercules, 94547
Fort McKinley:  Can you be Filipino and Fancy at the same time?  Yes!  This place also has a fantastic weekday lunch buffet for a ridiculously low price.  It's also close to the airport, perfect for getting in your last Filipino meal before you hop a flight to where there is no Filipino food.
101 Brentwood Drive
South San Francisco, CA  94080

FRENCH FOOD
Zazie : One of the best brunches in the city, but also good for dinner.  The food tastes the way a French grandmother (if you are lucky enough to know one) cooks, and the portions are just right (you won't leave hungry, but you won't have leftovers to take home).
941 Cole Street
San Francisco 94117
Metro: Cole Valley (J line)
Chouchou : One of the few places where both the food and the ambience make me feel like I'm not just in France, but in a lively residential Parisian neighborhood.
400 Dewey Boulevard
San Francisco 94116
Metro: Forest Hill (L line)

GERMAN FOOD
Suppenkueche :

ITALIAN FOOD
Vicoletto: Where Italians can act like Italians.
Vicoletto : Everything tastes fresh and top quality, there's nothing gimmicky or kitsch about Vicoletto, unlike most restaurants in North Beach.  I love this place so much, I had my civil wedding reception here.
550 Green Street
San Francisco 94133

PASTRIES AND VIENNOISERIES
B Patisserie : Perfect, flaky viennoiserie.
2821 California Street
San Francisco 94115

THAI FOOD
Thai Spice (no website) : I love their pad thai, almost to the exclusion of everything else on the menu, but everyone else that I've brought to this restaurant has loved it.
2701 Pinole Valley Road, Suite B
Pinole, 94564
King of Thai Noodle House : Multiple San Francisco locations.  It's a chain, it's greasy, and it's open until 2am for folks on the bar scene; in this case, these are actually positive qualities!  I have plenty of Thai friends who love King of Thai for a quick lunch or for pre- and post-karaoke munchies.
